Around 278 thousand people were internally displaced in Libya between January and February 2021. The number was particularly high. Over 316 thousand internally displaced persons (IDPs) were registered as of October the previous year. From 2017 onwards, the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Libya peaked at over 343 thousand in 2019. People identified as IDPs were forced to leave their place of residence and remained within their country's borders. The largest displaced communities in Libya are in the regions of Tripoli and Benghazi.

The source specifies that data were retrieved via DTM's Mobility Tracking module "through key informants at both the municipality and community level on a bi-monthly data collection cycle".
Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are "persons or groups of persons who have been forced or obliged to flee or to leave their homes or places of habitual residence, in particular as a result of or in order to avoid the effects of armed conflict, situations of generalized violence, violations of human rights or natural or human-made disasters, and who have not crossed an internationally recognized State border” (United Nation's Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement, 1998).
