In a survey conducted in December 2020, around 34 percent of heterosexual Japanese respondents were grouped into a category called "aware, but not taking action". This category groups people who are generally aware of the LGBTQ+ community, but do not consider LGBTQ+ issues, as they are not closely acquainted with anyone directly affected. Almost 16 percent of people in this group reported to know someone who identifies as part of a sexual minority.
The respondent groups most likely to have a family member, friend or acquaintance who is part of the community were evaluated to be either active supporters or naturally open-minded, showing that familiarity with the LGBTQ+ community was in correlation with the level of understanding and support.
The acronym LGBTQ+, often just LGBT, is an umbrella term describing members of sexual minorities. The individual letters stand for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning, with the "+" including an additional and larger spectrum of sexual identities and gender identities.

Original question: Are you familiar with a person who identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community, be it in your family, circle of friends or among your acquaintances?
During the survey, five aspects were taken into consideration: awareness of LGBTQ+ topics, thoughtfulness regarding LGBTQ+ issues, visceral repugnance, concerns regarding social impact, general knowledge.
Definition of cluster analysis:
Active supporters: This group is characterized by their high level of awareness regarding LGBTQ+ issues, as well as their active support for the community.
Naturally open-minded: While not really knowledgeable about the LGBTQ+ community, this group of respondents is naturally open-minded and comparatively considerate towards issues faced by sexual minorities.
Aware, but not taking action: This group of respondents is aware of the LGBTQ+ community, but they do not feel the need to think about the community's issues, as they do not have LGBTQ+ acquaintances in their close surroundings.
Influenced by misconceptions: This group is worried about the influence of LGBTQ+ couples on the declining birth rates in Japan. They are naturally conscious of human rights, so their opposition stems from social concerns rather than repugnance.
Avoiding the topic: Members of this group are not actively opposing the LGBTQ+ community, but they do not consider the challenges faced by the community to be a general issue and therefore avoid the topic.
Openly opposed/criticizing: This group has a visceral repugnance towards the LGBTQ+ community and is concerned about potentially negative impacts on society.
