According to a survey conducted in February 2021 in Japan, almost 49 percent of respondents stated that they do not buy a plastic bag while shopping. While the majority of Japanese consumers tried to take reusable shopping bags with them, around three percent admitted that they usually buy plastic bags at checkouts.
Following a change in regulations to reduce plastic waste in July 2020, retailers in Japan started to charge customers a mandatory fee for plastic bags.
