Get in touch with us nowIn 2022, the share of Italian respondents who stated to trust the Catholic Church was 41 percent. Compared to 2009, the trust gradually decreased. The highest figure has been recorded in 2013, when Pope Francis was elected after the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, probably highlighting strong expectations for the renovation of the institution coming with the new leader. Nevertheless, in the following years, the people's trust settled back to around 40 percent. By contrast, Italians share a much higher confidence in Pope Francis than in the Church, as in 2022 almost 70 percent of the citizens declared to trust him.
