Opinion on savings needed to retire in Japan 2022

According to a survey conducted in 2022, close to 20 percent of the respondents in Japan thought that their own household needed to save up to 25 million Japanese yen before going into retirement. At the same time, a share of 17 percent thought that up to 15 million yen were needed before retirement.

Original survey question: "How much do you think your household will need to save before receiving the public pension? If you are already receiving a public pension, please indicate the amount you had saved when you started receiving the pension. (Fill in actual numbers)"

Respondents were asked to choose between visits and postal retrieval of surveys.
Responses were requested from the head of the household or the person in the household who has control over the household budget and savings.

100 Japanese yen equal 0.75 U.S. dollars or 0.69 euros as of April 2023.
