Transportation sector CO₂ emissions change in the U.S. 1990-2023
Transportation sector emissions in the United States increased by 0.8 percent in 2023 from the previous year. The largest annual reduction in transportation emissions since 1990 was observed in 2020. The outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent restrictions on travel caused emissions from this sector to plummet more than 15 percent year-over-year. The easing of restrictions and the return to normal transportation activities saw emissions rebound sharply in 2021.
