As of April 2021, a total of 130 refugees and asylum-seekers were in Libya's detention centers (DCs). The majority of them, 70 individuals, came from Eritrea. Other 30 and 16 people, on the other hand, were from Somalia and Sudan, respectively. Libyan DCs are often known as places where human rights are constantly violated. Refugees and migrants who were held in the centers report overcrowded spaces, food shortage, lack of sanitation and health care, forced labor, as well as acts of physical violence and sexual abuse. Individuals in detention represented only a very limited part of the total number of refugees and asylum-seekers in Libya, which amounted to nearly 45.5 thousand people in 2020.
