In the fiscal year 2019, the majority of business establishments in Japan with a parental leave system offered the benefits to employees until their child turned two years old. Only around three percent of business establishments provided childcare leave for employees with children aged three years or older. Under the Child Care and Family Care Leave Act amended in 2017, parents are entitled to take parental leave until one day before the child turns two if the conditions are met.
