In 2020, 52 percent of the microplastic that was found in Lake Biwa in Japan was composed of polyethylene (PE). Polypropylene (PP) followed, making up the second largest source for microplastic. Lake Biwa is the largest freshwater lake in Japan and is located in Shiga Prefecture.
