Violence towards Cameroonian refugees in Nigeria 2020, by state
Nigeria hosts many refugees from Cameroon. The majority of Cameroonian refugees in Nigeria are in the states of Cross River, Benue, and Taraba, the states at the borders with Cameroon. Cameroonians escape from violence between security forces and armed groups ongoing in their country. A recent study published in 2021 reported the forms of violence towards Cameroonian refugees that occurred in the Nigerian states of Cross River, Benue, and Taraba. In 2020, the most frequent crime cases reported was physical violence, mainly occurring in Benue. A large share of people were victims of sexual assaults and rape as well. In particular, 43 percent of reported cases in Taraba were sexual assaults and rape, which occurred more frequently than physical assaults.
