State aid spending as a share of the European Union's overall gross domestic product was 0.81 percent in 2019, compared with 0.75 percent in 2017. State aid spending has increased steadily in recent years after reaching a low of 0.43 percent of EU GDP in 2011. Throughout this time period, state aid spending in the UK has been consistently below the EU average.
