In 2016, about 23 percent of stalking victims in the United States had their stalking stopped by changing or blocking their phone number, email, or social media account or by getting a new phone or computer. A further 8.2 percent of victims had their stalking stopped because the victim moved.

To be classified as a victim of stalking in the Supplemental Victimization Survey, the respondent must have experienced a repeated course of conduct that either caused them substantial emotional distress or to fear for their safety or the safety of someone they know or would cause a reasonable person to fear for their safety or the safety of someone they know.
*Includes employer; school official, faculty, or staff; clergy or faith leader; or some other person.
**Includes the offender died and other reasons why the stalking behaviors stopped.
