In 2016, about 45 percent of stalking victims in the United States were stalked for a duration of one month to less than one year. On the other hand, about 24 percent of stalking victims were stalked for two years or more.

To be classified as a victim of stalking in the Supplemental Victimization Survey, the respondent must have experienced a repeated course of conduct that either caused them substantial emotional distress or to fear for their safety or the safety of someone they know or would cause a reasonable person to fear for their safety or the safety of someone they know.
