In 2016, about 59 percent of victims of traditional stalking in the United States were being following around and/or watched by their perpetrator. About 24 percent of victims had unwanted items, such as cards, letters, presents, or flowers left or sent to them by their stalker.

To be classified as a victim of stalking in the Supplemental Victimization Survey, the respondent must have experienced a repeated course of conduct that either caused them substantial emotional distress or to fear for their safety or the safety of someone they know or would cause a reasonable person to fear for their safety or the safety of someone they know.
More than one type of stalking behavior was possible.
