In 2016, about 1.5 percent of people in the United States were victims of stalking. Of these, about 0.5 percent of stalking victims were stalked via technology only, and a further 0.3 percent were victims of traditional stalking.

To be classified as a victim of stalking in the Supplemental Victimization Survey, the respondent must have experienced a repeated course of conduct that either caused them substantial emotional distress or to fear for their safety or the safety of someone they know or would cause a reasonable person to fear for their safety or the safety of someone they know.
