Number of emigrants in Norway 2022, by age group

Emigration from Norway has generally declined over the past decade. The lowest number of emigrants was registered in 2020 when around 27,000 people left the Scandinavian country. In 2022, the number of emigrations reached 32,500. People aged 16 to 44 formed the biggest group of emigrants that year, reaching nearly 21,000 individuals.

Where do the emigrants go?

The highest proportion of emigrants from Norway go to neighboring countries. In 2022, most of the emigrants moved to Denmark and Sweden, reaching close to 3,000 individuals. Other popular destinations were Poland (1,400 emigrants), the United Kingdom (1,500 emigrants), and Lithuania (870 emigrants).

Fewer immigrants, but a new record in 2022

Up until 2020, also the number of immigrants decreased, but reached a record number in 2022 following the high number of refugees arriving from Ukraine after Russia invaded the country in February that year. Nearly 18,000 Ukrainians arrived in Norway that year.
