In 2021, the carbon dioxide emissions in the electric power industry in Japan amounted to around 327 million tons of CO2 equivalent. Figures increased to 484 million tons of CO2 equivalent in 2013 but indicated a decrease in more recent years.
After the nuclear disaster in Fukushima in 2011, nuclear energy was replaced by fossil fuels. To decrease greenhouse gas emissions, Japan currently aims to increase its energy production from renewable energy sources as well as nuclear energy.
