Reasons for suicide South Korea 2022
In 2022, more than 5,000 people in South Korea committed suicide due to mental illness. Mental illness, financial problems, and physical illness were the most common reasons for dying by suicide among South Koreans that year.
Suicidal thoughts in adolescents and older people
South Korea faces several social challenges, including a rigid work culture and the societal pressure to conform. The country also has a highly competitive job market and academic system. Issues induced by the latter have been noted as the predominant reason for suicidal thoughts among students and contribute to the fact that suicide is by far the most common cause of death for young South Koreans. Meanwhile, the growing disintegration of family ties and economic inequality in South Korea have led many older citizens to cite loneliness and financial difficulties as significant factors contributing to their suicidal thoughts.
How does the country tackle the high suicide rate?
The ongoing challenges in the nation have led it to rank first among member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in suicide rates. Additionally, several high-profile suicides of celebrities in the country have caused temporary spikes in these rates. Although authorities have recognized the problem and have increased the budget for suicide prevention over the years, they have not yet succeeded in resolving the issue. However, public awareness has grown in recent years, and there has been a gradual reduction in the stigma surrounding mental health.
