As a result of the global travel restrictions imposed to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, the São Paulo International Airport registered a steep decline in passenger traffic in 2020. In April of that year, the number of domestic and international air travelers arriving to or departing from South America's busiest airport dropped to only 279.4 thousand from the 4.2 million recorded three months earlier. The monthly number of domestic travelers at Guarulhos Airport recovered much faster than the international segment, though remaining below pre-pandemic levels.
