Total Australian ODA FY 2023, by region of benefit

In the financial year 2023, Australia allocated approximately 1.8 billion Australian dollars in Official Development Assistance (ODA) to the Pacific region. Additionally, around 1.2 billion Australian dollars were allocated to the South-East, East Asia, and other parts of Asia that year.

Distribution of Australian ODA

In order to ensure that development assistance funds are used where they will be most useful, the distribution of Australian ODA is spread out across many different partners, with multilateral organizations and commercial suppliers receiving the majority of funding. In addition, ODA is then distributed across many different sector groups, such as health or education.

Australian ODA in the Pacific region

While it is commonly thought that most development assistance is given in the form of humanitarian aid, the distribution of Australian ODA in the Pacific region shows a greater emphasis on supporting good governance, and building or maintaining economic infrastructure and services. Out of the approximately 1.8 billion Australian dollars spent on ODA in the Pacific region in 2023, around 150 million Australian dollars was spent on the governance sector group in Papua New Guinea alone, compared to the 19 million Australian dollars spent on humanitarian aid in the country.
