According to a survey conducted in Japan in 2020, shortly after the cashless rebate program ended, credit cards were the leading cashless payment method used, with almost 70 percent of the respondents using the payment method at least once per month.
The Japanese government introduced the cashless rebate program in October 2019 to mitigate the impact of a consumption tax hike on consumers while promoting the use of cashless payment methods.
