The area of hypermarkets grew steadily in the past decade in China, regardless the number of hypermarkets dropped to less than half compared to 2011. In 2021, the total operating space of hypermarkets in China amounted to over 36.7 square kilometers, a decrease from around 38.2 square kilometers in the previous year.
