The United States combusted 740,000 tons of plastic bags, sacks, and wraps for energy recovery in 2018. In the same year, 440,000 tons of PET bottles and jars were combusted for energy recovery which was an increase of 30,000 tons from the previous year. Combustion with energy recovery accounted for 17 percent of plastic packaging waste treatment in the U.S. in 2018.
