Cash usage in Latin America declined across six different countries, although Mexico and Peru relied more on cash in 2022 than Brazil or Chile. This is according to a model created to measure the share of cash in overall payments transactions in physical brick and mortar stores. The share of cash is based on transaction value, or how much money was actually paid. Official figures on cash often do not exist, as coins and paper money are often not tracked. A relatively new field of research in this topic includes domestic payment diary surveys, where consumers record how often and by how much they used certain payment methods. The six countries shown here, however, have a relatively high share of cash in POS compared to other countries, especially in Europe or Asia-Pacific.
