As of 2021, there were 2,240 civil unions in South Africa. Apart from the year 2020, the number of civil unions registered in the country experienced an increase. From 2020 to 2021, there was marked increase of around 52 percent in the number of marriages. South Africa is the only African country where same-sex couples can marry since 2006.
