Eating delicious food and dishes was the leading occasions during which Japanese consumers felt gratitude towards foods, as revealed in a survey conducted in November 2023. While around 44 percent named the consumption of delicious foods as a common reason, almost 34 percent linked the feeling to the seasonality of dishes.
Gratefulness towards nature, in particular, is an important concept integrated in Japanese dining etiquette. It is commonly expressed through the custom of saying "I humbly receive." (itadakimasu) before eating.
