In 2022, around four percent of the world population in extreme poverty lived in Tanzania, considering that the poverty threshold was at 1.90 U.S. dollars a day. The share fluctuated in recent years, following a generally increasing trend. As of 2016, poor Tanzanians accounted for 3.6 percent of the world population living on a maximum of 1.90 U.S. dollars daily. Moreover, Tanzania ranked top among the African countries with the highest share of global population in extreme poverty.
