According to a survey conducted in December 2022, almost 71 percent of smartphone users in Japan neither knew the term nor the meaning of sextortion. The term is a portmanteau of "sex" and "extortion." It refers to a form of extortion involving sex, either in the form of sexually explicit material that is used to coerce victims, or by an abuse of power with the aim of extorting sexual favors.
