Over 64 percent of respondents consumed traditional New Year meals every year, whereas eight percent partake in the festivities. Common food served during the turn of the year include traditional dishes in stackable boxes (o-sechi), rice cake (mochi), and soup with mochi (zoni). Dishes with symbolic meaning such as soba noodles for longevity are also popular at the dawn of a new year.
