As of 2020, the volume of mobile money operations in West Africa reached 6.4 billion, up from 4.8 billion the previous year. This represented a rise by 29 percent, following a visible upward trend since 2016. Moreover, the 2020 volume accumulated a total transaction value of 178 billion U.S. dollars. Overall, compared to other regions of the world, sub-Saharan Africa recorded the highest mobile money transaction value and volume in 2019.
