Share of microchipped pets in Japan 2024, by type

The majority of pet owners in Japan have not microchipped their pets, according to a survey conducted in February 2024. While 43.4 percent of dogs held as pets had a microchip implant, only around 18.8 percent of cat owners had a chip injected into their cats. 
Since June 2022, implanting microchips in dogs and cats became mandatory for breeders and pet stores in Japan as a measure against a growing stray population.
