The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic had a major impact on tourism in the Netherlands. In 2020, travel was restricted as the virus spread, resulting in a significant drop in tourism receipts during the second quarter of the year to 1.29 billion U.S. dollars. That was roughly a 74 percent drop over the total tourism receipts recorded in the second quarter of 2019. In the fourth quarter of 2020, international tourism receipts in the Netherlands reached again around 1.29 billion U.S. dollars, still down by over three billion over the same period of the previous year.
The Netherlands imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 15 to prevent the spread of the virus. This included shutting down non-essential businesses, and non-essential travels were also banned for all countries. The travel ban was gradually lifted during May and June, then new restrictions were implemented in October.
