Active customers in Australia and New Zealand Afterpay FY 2019-2021

In financial year 2021 Afterpay had approximately 3.6 million active customers in Australia and New Zealand. This figure represents an eight percent increase in the number of active customers in 2020. Afterpay is an Australian-based fintech company operating in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia. The company offers a payment service that splits online or in-store purchases into four installments.

Afterpay has found success in the Oceania market, reporting an EBITDA in Australia and New Zealand of almost 200 million Australian dollars in 2021. Part of Afterpay’s income comes from transaction fees charged to merchants, however, this has not dissuaded the thousands of active merchants in Australia and New Zealand that provide the payment service to their customers.

Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL)

The BNPL market in Australia has developed rapidly, with the concept of customers taking out small credit lines to spread payments over time becoming more widely accepted. The clothing and electronics categories were the most popular for consumers who have used Buy Now Pay Later services in the country. While adoption rates of BNPL in Australia are relatively high, it is yet to be seen if this payment method will establish itself as a standard payment method in the future.
