In the second half of 2020, Brazilians elected mayors and alderpersons in all of Brazil's 5,565 municipalities (cities). For the so-called electoral season, the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE, as abbreviated in Portuguese) established cooperation with WhatsApp to fight bulk messaging and the spread of fake news. The court reported to the mobile app almost five thousand acts of bulk messaging, which resulted in the banning of little more than 1,000 accounts. Regardless of TSE's reports, WhatsApp banned a total of 360,000 accounts throughout the electoral season, either for bulk messaging or for spam. The court also kept a bot on WhatsApp for answering voters' frequently asked questions. More than a million accounts turned to this bot to clarify doubts about that year's municipal elections.
