According to a survey conducted in June 2020 in Japan, around 31 percent of respondents stated to have increased purchases made over general online retail sites and applications such as Amazon and Rakuten during the self-restraint period of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This represented the online channel with the highest increase in purchase frequency.
While an explicit lockdown was not enforced on a national level in Japan, businesses were asked to reduce business hours or close down voluntarily. Additionally, citizens were asked to practice self-restraint and refrain from going out unnecessarily, driving the popularity of online retail channels.
