In 2021, 21 regional banks in Japan were affected by online banking fraud. While the number of affected regional banks slightly declined compared to the previous year, the number of affected city banks and other banks increased to 20. The total number of online banking fraud cases recorded by the police in Japan surged in 2019 and stayed on a high level in 2020, before decreasing again in 2021.
