In 2022, the domestic final consumption expenditure on nondurable consumer goods in Japan amounted to around 91 trillion Japanese yen. Nondurable goods made up the second largest source of expenditure among Japanese households, following services.
Monthly household budgets
The average Japanese household spends more than 200 thousand yen per month on goods and services, with expenditures fluctuating only slightly in the last decade. While fees for daily services like transportation and communication sum up to be the largest category of household spending, foodstuff accounts for the largest share as a single expense item. In the last decade, monthly food expenses showed a steady upward trend, driven by rising consumer prices, tax hikes, and the demand for quality products.
Nondurable segments
Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) play a major role within the Japanese nondurable consumer goods market. Distributed through an efficient network of retailers, foodstuff and daily necessities like toiletries make up the majority of expenditure on nondurables. Apart from supermarkets and specialty stores, convenience stores, commonly referred to as konbini, are a significant driver for FMCG sales. Stocking individually packaged fresh and convenience foods as well as personal care products, konbinis are popular for small detours on the way home.
