The extraordinary measures implemented by the Italian government to contain the spread of COVID-19 over the course of 2020 had a dramatic impact on the country's economy. Both the primary and the tertiary sectors recorded contractions by more than seven percent in value added in the fourth quarter of 2020. Manufacturing was the best performing sector, but it still suffered a 2.4 percent decrease in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared to the fourth quarter of 2019. In the second quarter of 2021, instead, the sectors of agriculture, forestry, and fishing as well as manufacturing experienced an increase.
