The extraordinary measures taken by the Italian government to contain the spread of COVID-19 over the course of 2020 and 2021 had a dramatic impact on the country's economy. The domestic demand recorded a positive sign in the second quarter of 2021, with demand increasing by 2.7 percent compared to the previous quarter. The year 2020, instead, recorded two straight quarters of contraction. The second quarter of 2020, in particular, recorded the most severe contraction in the period under consideration, with domestic demand in Italy decreasing by 10.1 percent compared to the previous quarter.
