South Africa's external debt reached over 170 billion U.S. dollars in 2021, which corresponded to the highest stock of foreign debt in Sub-Saharan Africa. Nigeria and Angola followed, each with debts of 76.2 billion and 67.3 billion U.S. dollars. Overall, external debt in Sub-Saharan Africa has been increasing. In 2020, the foreign debt burden in the region accumulated just under 790 billion U.S. dollars.
