A survey conducted on travel plans during Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr period in Indonesia in 2024 found that 49 percent of respondents planned to go to other cities for Eid. Visiting family and friends in hometowns and villages, or commonly known as mudik, is an important tradition during the Eid holidays in Indonesia.
Activities during Eid al-Fitr
Eid marks the end of Ramadan and the first day of Shawwal, which is the tenth month in the Islamic calendar. Eid al-Fitr is universally celebrated among Muslims around the world. Indonesian employees who celebrate Eid usually receive a Tunjangan Hari Raya (THR) or a bonus around this time. Apart from buying materialistic items using this allowance, Muslims are encouraged to donate a fraction of their wealth through the practice of zakat or giving alms. This was the leading area of spending during Ramadan among Indonesians.
