According to a survey conducted in February 2021 in Japan, almost 40 percent of respondents were glad they kept a pet during the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), as they did not feel lonely with their animal companion at home.
While an explicit lockdown was not enforced on a national level in Japan, the state of emergency was declared, in particular, in metropolitan regions. Businesses were asked to close down and allow employees to work from home, whereas citizens were asked to avoid going out unnecessarily.
