Most femicides registered in five Brazilian states in 2022 were committed by partners or former partners of the victims. Of 495 women killed due to their gender in São Paulo, Pernambuco, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Maranhão, Piauí and Ceará, 75 percent were murdered by their current or former husband, boyfriend or partner. Unknown people to the victim accounted for four percent of femicides.
