Global methane emissions from livestock activities are projected to increase by 5.7 million metric tons per year or 7.1 million metric tons per year, according to IIASA and EPA models, respectively. Meanwhile, both models estimate that annual emissions from rice cultivation will see little change in the period, or possibly decrease. While both models estimate that methane emissions from solid waste will change by roughly nine metric tons per year, estimates for the energy sector differ widely. IIASA projections show methane emissions from gas will change by 7.7 Mt/yr between 2020 and 2030, while EPA projections show a change 3.5 Mt/yr.
Projected change in baseline anthropogenic methane (CH₄) emissions worldwide from 2020 to 2030, by subsector and model
(in million metric tons per year)
International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) projections are "bottom-up" inventory style models. Bottom-up inventories produce estimates largely by relying on activity data and emissions factors for individual sources.
