The food industry is a major source of global greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions shares from different food system sectors vary from country to country. For example, energy-related activities contributed an estimated 44 percent of the total food-related GHG emissions in China in 2015. In comparison, land-based activities accounted for the largest share of food-related emissions in India. In the United States, both energy and land based activities contributed roughly the same share of food-related emissions in the country.
