Breakdown of automated container terminals by country or territory 2021

Globally, there were 51 automated container terminals in 2021. Australia was leading the ranking with six such terminals, followed by the Netherlands, the United States, and the United Kingdom, each with five terminals.

Increasing volume of containerized trade

One of the major drivers of the automation of container terminals is the growing volume containerized cargo transported by ships. Moreover, personnel shortages during the coronavirus pandemic further incentivized terminal operators to reduce the human element in their operations.

Largest ports concentrated in Asia

Nine out of ten leading container ports in terms of throughput were located in Asia in 2022. The Port of Shanghai ranked first with a throughput of over 47 million TEUs of containers that year.
