Value of Chinese loans to African countries 2000-2020
African countries borrowed around 160 billion U.S. dollars from China in the period between 2000 and 2020. The value refers to loan commitments signed between Chinese financiers and governments as well as state-owned enterprises. During this period, Chinese credit granted to Africa peaked at 28.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2016. In that year, the number of loans was also at its highest.
