Distribution pipelines are estimated to be the cheapest pipeline types to retrofit or construct for hydrogen use. For one kilometer of distribution pipeline capital spending was estimated between 0.3 and 0.7 million U.S. dollars. By comparison, new subsea transmission lines such as those needed to transport hydrogen produced at offshore wind farms, were estimated to cost up to 7.1 million U.S. dollars per kilometer.
