Opinion regarding the production of electricity by nuclear power plants France 2021

French citizens highly consider their nuclear energy sector. In 2021, their support towards the production of electricity and energy through power plants remains undoubtedly important, with a 59 percent rate of general approval.
Nevertheless, as seen with the incidents of Chernobyl and Fukushima, nuclear power plants entail significant safety issues, while nuclear waste management is a growing concern among both the population and environmental activists.

The nuclear sector is still the leader in energy production

Across the European continent, there are very few countries that can be called nuclear power generators. With one reactor under construction and more than 50 active reactors, France is the leading country for nuclear energy. Moreover, since the 1990s, nuclear power has been the main source of electricity and accounted for 71.7 percent of the total power generation in 2018. However, a more sustainable approach to life as well as behaviors that are more inclined to protect the planet are clearly on the rise, and renewable energies are gaining momentum.

Pollution and waste management becomes a major concern for French people

As previously said, significant environmental issues come with nuclear energy and its waste. In fact, its volume is expected to reach a lofty amount by 2040.
The growing interest in a more sustainable lifestyle and concerns about climate change are taken very seriously by French citizens. In fact, 76 percent of French people declared that each person should change its consumption behavior and habits to cope with the environmental crisis. Furthermore, 59 percent of French citizens are very concerned about river and aquifer pollution across the country. Finally, 54 percent of the French population consider it an absolute priority for companies and organizations to reduce their amount of waste.
