Leading music service apps downloaded in Australia 2024
According to AppMagic, Spotify was the most downloaded music service app in Australia as of January 2024 with around 25 million downloads. Shazam and YouTube Music came in second and third, with approximately 10 million and 9.5 million downloads, respectively. Furthermore, in 2023, just under half of Australian consumers who spent money on digital music content did so from Spotify, making the music streaming giant one of Australia's most popular music service apps.
Physical to Digital
The market size of the digital music distribution industry has gradually increased over the last few years. The digital music distribution market in Australia reached approximately one billion Australian dollars in 2020 and was expected to climb to approximately 1.4 billion Australian dollars by 2024. This has coincided with a decrease in physical music sales compared to digital music sales over the past decade. Digital music services such as Spotify and Apple Music not only allow listeners to choose any content at their leisure, but they also provide consumers with access to a vast array of content.
Streaming consumption
In today's society, digital music services are easily available via a wide range of devices. In a survey conducted in 2022 about online audio streaming in Australia, just under half of the respondents indicated that they had listened to Spotify services in the previous week. In comparison, 15 percent of respondents claimed they had listened to YouTube Music and only one percent said they had listened to Amazon Music.
